"Poetry is life distilled." - Gwendolyn Brooks
One 30min class/week
The study of structured, expressive, and creative sound describes the disciplines of both music and poetry. Using both as jumping-off points, students listen to, read aloud, and write their own poems.
Equal emphasis is put on guided writing, free writing, reading, and listening to poetry. Class reads a wide range of poetry: published poems by kids of all ages, adult-written kid's poems, contemporary and canonized poetry. While fostering creative and flexible minds, we build vocabulary, reading comprehension, writing, public speaking skills, and self-confidence.
Course culminates in hand-bound books, and a poetry reading where students have the opportunity to share their amazing work with family and friends!
