Joe Michael Forrey Wilson

Saxophone & Piano

Joe Michael Forrey Wilson is a professional saxophonist, arranger, and bandleader based in New York City and working in venues around the world.  He works steadily as a solo artist, in jazz ensembles, horn sections, studios, live DJ sets, cocktail hours, and with bands.  Whether improvising a solo or sight-reading a big band chart, he brings a deep love and respect for all kinds of traditions and genre-bending music.  His live performances have been praised by the likes of Fred Thomas (long-time James Brown bassist) and Kaleta Ligen-Majek (bandleader of Zozo Afrobeat and long-time percussionist for Lauryn Hill and Fela Kuti).

Joe has performed, recorded, written, and arranged horns for many styles of music including jazz, soul, funk, salsa/merengue, cumbia, traditional/gypsy swing, afrobeat, reggae, rock'n'roll, pop, and new music.  He has led jazz ensembles, played with backing tracks, or jammed all night with DJ's at many private parties in the tri-state area, and he freelances on studio recordings by all styles of New York bands and projects. Professional artists who have recorded Joe include Karikatura, Vieux Farka Toure, Carte Blanche, Izzy and the Catastophics, Top Shotta Band, Justina Soto and the Salvation Armband, Christopher Sheard, Minimum Tek, Captain Planet, and The Epochs.  Joe has graced some of the world's most legendary stages today including The Brooklyn Bowl, Bowery Ballroom, The Jazz Standard, Zinc Bar, The Knitting Factory, SOB's, City Winery, The Bellhouse, Rockwood Music Hall, Drom, BAM, The Brooklyn Museum, Martyr's in Chicago, Le Maison in New Orleans, and The Reigen in Vienna.

As a full-time member of Karikatura, a socially conscious and internationally-inspired music making force, Joe has performed on multiple tours of Europe, Brazil, and the United States.  After a year of intensive writing, rehearsal, recording, and postproduction sessions, their first full-length self-produced record Eyes Wide (Ropeadope) debuted at #1 on the World Music Charts of iTunes, and stayed in the top 10 for two weeks.

During his free time from serving projects, Joe nurtures his lifelong personal avant-neo-soul-jazz project, The Joe Wilson Transmission, who made their debut record New Life Forms in 2012.  Their second record was released 2014.
