Owen Dodds

Piano, Voice

Owen Dodds is a pianist and composer from Winston-Salem, North Carolina. He currently lives in New York where he performs as a classical soloist, chamber musician, and improviser. Owen’s musical curiosity was fostered from an early age by his father, a professional musician, and mother, a painter and author of children's books. Owen’s first instrument was the violin, but since he acquired a piano around the age of ten, he dedicated all of his musical time to this instrument.

Owen began his official piano and composition studies as an eighth grader at North Carolina School of the Arts, later earning his bachelor's degree from the same institution. He went on to receive degrees from Boston University and Mannes School of Music, and is currently completing his Doctorate of Musical Arts degree at Stony Brook University under the guidance of pianist Gilbert Kalish.

Owen is an active soloist and sought-after collaborator. His music career has recently taken him to venues such as Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall, Steinway Hall, the Czech Center New York, and Lincoln Center’s Clark Studio Theater. Owen is looking forward to many performances this season including Bartok’s 3rd piano concerto with the Stony Brook University Symphony Orchestra.

Owen's teaching aims to give students the tools they need to express themselves through music. This includes not only proper technical ability at the piano, understanding of theory, and a well trained ear, but most importantly an inspiration rooted in history, culture, and observation. No two musical journeys are alike and so he strives for an awareness of each student's passions, motivations, and strengths. Owen’s students have recently performed in venues such as Carnegie Hall, Steinway Hall, and Flushing Town Hall.
