SAVIDU GEEVARATNE

Piano, Voice, Suzuki Pre-K

Savidu Geevaratne is so excited to join Tone Academy! Born in Colombo, Sri Lanka and raised in San Jose, California, Savidu comes to Tone having sung since he was 6 years old and has stayed deeply involved in music since then. He graduated from NYU Tisch School of the Arts with a BFA in Musical Theater and a minor in Environmental Studies.

Savidu grew up making far too much noise but is thankful to his mother, who encouraged him to channel his energy into some early theatrical pursuits. He went on to play a range of glamorous roles from “Mouse Squad/Larry/Emerald Citygoer” in The Wiz to “Aladdin” in Aladdin Jr. While pursuing theater in high school, Savidu participated in every music class and group he could find from Wind Ensemble, to marching band, to jazz band, to All-State Choir. But in every group what he loved most was working with his fellow musicians and theater people to make something together. He followed this passion all the way to university and beyond.

At NYU, Savidu furthered his artistic education in musical theater, voice, and performance and was in productions of As You Like It, Spring Awakening, Head Over Heels, and worked extensively with the Graduate Musical Theater Writing Program working on new musicals. He also beatboxed and sang tenor for the NYU N’Harmonics who went on to win the 2019 ICCA Championships, after which he served as Music Director for two years.

In his professional life, Savidu works as a vocalist and actor. He spent three summers on Cape Cod with the a cappella group Hyannis Sound performing every day for the people of Massachusetts. He can be heard on their two most recent albums: Bootleg ‘21 and ‘22, and will be on their next album released at the end of the summer. He recently made his Off-Broadway Debut at the Claire Tow Theater at Lincoln Center with the new play Your Own Personal Exegesis and can currently be seen at St. Anne’s Warehouse in Dumbo with the new musical Monsoon Wedding open now through June 25th.

As a teacher, Savidu brings a vibrant energy along with a diverse musical palette to his students. He believes every student’s musical voice is unique and tailors his teaching towards letting that uniqueness shine through in practice and performance. He believes that experience is the best teacher, but he knows too well how essential his teachers were along his journey, so he hopes to be that person for his new students at Tone. Above all, he believes music should be fun!
